This is a smart and practical George VI Sterling Silver Tea Strainer. The strainer has a round pierced bowl with two hooks to hang over the rim of your teacup or mug. The stem is pierced at the top with an elaborate foliate design. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The tea strainer was made by the well known firm of Viner's Ltd in Sheffield and dates to 1939. Viner's was founded around 1900 by Adolphe Viener, who later Anglicized his family surname to Viner. Starting out as electroplaters, the firm moved into silverware in the early 1920s. They remained extremely successful up until the 1970s but later had difficulties and ceased trading in the 1980s. The Viner's brand name is now owned by Oneida.

Condition is good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 14.8cm / 5.8ins long and 5.8cm / 2.3ins in diameter across the top of the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 43.0g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter w for 1939 and the E V makers' mark for Emile Viner, who was head of Viner's Ltd at this time.
