This powder compact is suitable for modern pressed / solid face powders or as a handbag mirror.
Yardley of London is one of the world's oldest cosmetic companies. Established in 1770, Yardley was a major producer of soap and perfumery by the beginning of the 20th century. By 1910 it moved to London's Bond Street, and in 1921 Yardley received its first Royal Warrant. Today, Yardley holds two Royal Warrants.
English Lavender was Yardley’s signature brand. English lavender is grown in the south of England for the Company. This scent first became popular in Victorian England & by the 1880s
it was being exported to America with great success. Lavandula angustifolia is the variety grown especially for Yardley. In 1913 Yardley adopted Francis Wheatley’s “Flowersellers”
painting from his “Cries of London” (1795) series as their Company logo - as seen on this
powder compact. On Francis Wheatley’s painting the basket contained yellow
primroses - Yardley of course replaced these with sheaths of lavender.
A beautiful 1962 Yardley 'Feather Finish' powder compact in excellent condition with a long history behind it. The lid and base are decorated with a gilt textured effect. The lid bears the Yardley 'Feather Finish' feather graphic. The lid lifts to reveal an excellent mirror which gives a perfect reflection. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The manufacturers included a tiny hole in the base of this compact to facilitate the easy removal of powder pans. If any powder pan was stuck a pin pushed through this hole will remove them. A simple but effective solution. An extensive fact sheet is free with this purchase including a printed copy of the advertisement for the 'Feather Finish' product line.
This attractive vintage powder compact measures 3" & weighs 54.4 grams.
