A wonderful hallmarked 9 carat yellow gold Victorian portrait locket which was assayed at Birmingham in 1857. This impressive locket is embellished with deeply symbolic motifs and paired with an ornate fully hallmarked 9 carat yellow gold 18 inch necklace. The shield cartouche symbolises the desire of the donor to protect the wearer. The shield is framed by acanthus leaves which have meant everlasting life and longevity since ancient times. Acanthus leaves also grace the back of the locket. Floral motifs are also depicted, including the forget-me-not. Both the locket and necklace are in first rate condition. The catches and hinges work perfectly. Both of the original locket frames are present.
