Impressive Welsh Love Spoon c1880 Lovespoon Treen
A rare and important Antique Welsh Love Spoon of highly sought after large flat back type c1880. This is a most stunning example of good age. A very similar spoon most probably by the same maker is displayed in Brecon Museum which incorporates identifiable features such as the extended stem forming a rounded rats tail to the rear of the bowl. The stem of this spoon being elegantly shaped in the very same fashion as the highly sought after dolphin Cawl spoons of North Wales strongly suggesting this as it’s region of origin. This fine spoon displays several gorgeous traditional symbols as found in the very best antique love spoons, including triple offset heart, geometric pinwheels hanging chain link ring and chip carving to its perimeter. Expertly carved from a single piece of sycamore this is a truly special example displaying rich aged colour throughout with remnants of original dark finish.
With just one tiny historic chip to the bowl this is a very special antique Welsh Love Spoon indeed.
