J.M Ronketti, London. c.1800-10.
A good Georgian mahogany stick barometer by this famous and collected early London maker. The edge moulded case is mahogany veneered in the herring bone pattern and fitted with a broken pediment top,the boxwood line inlay follows around the case and the glazed door. The barometer is fitted with a portable boxwood cistern and screw which is concealed by a turned hemispherical cistern cover. The silvered brass register plate is fitted with a manually operated vernier.
The makers name and address is engraved, J M Ronketti, 6 Leather Lane, Bloomsbury, although the brass cap obscures the initials 'J M'(there are several known spellings of his name, Ronchetti, Ronkerti, Ronkitte etc.).
John Merry Ronketti was one of the earliest of the Italian immigrant barometer makers who came to England in the last quarter of the 18th century. Edwin Banfield shows him as working from 1787-1819 (6 Leather Lane, Bloomsbury, 1800-19)and notes him as making 'very fine stick and wheel barometers', and Goodison as 'he seems to have concentrated on bulb cistern stick and wheel barometers'.
Height 39". Unless otherwise stated all barometer prices include local delivery (50 miles). We deliver personally throughout the country, please contact us for prices excluding delivery or to discuss delivery further than 50 miles.
