Large Signed Yamatoku Imari Charger Late 19th C Yamatoku Imari Arita %%alt5%%
Large Imari charger with scalloped rim. Unusual in that it has an impressed mark (for the Yamatoku Kiln). Finely hand painted in traditional Imari colours with gold, c late 19th century. This charger is a quality example of the Imari porcelain ware that was made for export during the Meiji period. It has an unglazed foot and imprints on its underside from supports used during firing. Ground has a blue tint. Measures 40 cm in diameter.

The impressed mark on this piece is for the Yamatoku Kiln located in the Saga Prefecture on island of Kyushu. The Yamatoku kiln began production at the beginning of Meiji period (1868-1912). This impressed mark occurs on pieces up to c1910 - however hand-painted items such as this are earlier in date. Hand painted in traditional Imari colours with gold enamelling, this charger is typical of the Imari porcelain ware that was made for export during the Meiji period however more unusual in that it is marked - a sign of its higher quality.
