Late 19th / Early 20th C. Silver Plate Mustard Pot
This is a distinguished looking large late 19th or early 20th century Silver Plate Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The mustard pot is in the drum design originally made popular in the Georgian era. It has beaded rims to top and bottom, a scroll handle and an engraved crest of a lion holding a book on the lid, which is the crest of the Fardell family of London and Lincolnshire.
The mustard pot is made in Sheffield by silversmiths and electroplaters Martin, Hall & Co and dates to between around 1880 and 1910. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and no significant plate loss, just a little around the upper part of the interior where the glass liner rubs when being removed. The glass liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is of substantial size, measuring 9.3cm / 3.7ins from rim to handle, 6.8cm / 2.6ins across and 7cm / 2.7ins high. It weighs in at 245g / 8.6oz.
The underside of the base is stamped EPNS for silver plate and M H & Co inside a shield for Martin, Hall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
