Late Victorian Miniature Travelling Bone Chess Set.
The chess pieces are intricately carved in bone with typical dark flecks in places. One set is stained red, the other is natural bone colour.
The pieces are housed in a wooden box (chess board) covered with tooled and gilt leather, the squares are stained brown and tan. Inside it is lined with dark blue velvet. The box comes with its original cardboard cover with green (now faded) protective fabric on top. The cover has a ca 1.5cm opening at one end for pushing out the box.
The set is complete (2 x 16) and in very good used condition with minor signs of wear in places (esp. to the cover). The pieces are in great condition except two white pawns have their round top bits missing (as shown in a photo) - still fully usable or can be easily repaired.
All folded up in the cover the box dimensions are: 15cm x 7.5cm x 3cm. The chess board, when opened, is 15cm square.
The tallest piece is 3.5cm high.
Rare survivor and still usable chess set.
