also stamped The Thunderer Patent.
with a later base metal brass coloured chain with a T-bar.
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR, L&NWR) was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922. In the late 19th century, the LNWR was the largest joint stock company in the world. In 1923, it became a constituent of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway, and, in 1948, the London Midland Region of British Railways. The LNWR's main line remains today as the English and Welsh portions of the West Coast Main Line.
A whistle like this with the number 663 is on the Science Museum website. With the numbers being close they would be very similar in age dating from circa late 19th century. These were made by McPherson Brothers.
Approximate dimensions: whistle 58.2mm x 20.5mm x 26.6mm, chain length 42cm, total weight 64 grams.
Used condition but in good working order.
