Early painted dial longcase clocks have always been a particular favourate of mine as the hand painted dials can be quite exquisite and should not be confused with the mass produced factory examples produced in the 19th Century . The early ones were the very height of fashion and were in fact more expensive than their brass contemporaries.
Unfortunately it has been a long time since I have seen one of sufficient quality and proportions to compete with the finer examples in the longcase market. This is certainly such a clock.
Having been sourced from a discerning private collector this clock has lovely slim proportions highlighted by very fine inlay to both the front and sides. The front door and base centre panel are of fiddle back mahogany and I particularly like the unusual feature of a swept base.
The 13 inch arched dial has corners decorated to replicate brass spandrels and is signed in the arch by the maker. The centre has subsidiary dials for seconds and date and carries two mythical Phoenix birds.
The dial is in perfect condition with the black work being refreshed but the groundwork is original.
It is mounted directly to the well made 8 day rack striking movement with repeat facility . It strikes the hours on a bell and is complete with its original pendulum and typical Scottish oval weights.
William Brownlie is recorded as working in Hamilton from 1784-1800
This clock is in beautiful condition having a deep shine and excellent colour.Like all antiques there are the odd age related marks but nothing that will deter the most discerning buyer.
Prospective buyers are urged to view this clock to see how nice it really is.
The overall condition is outstanding with only the odd age related mark as can be expected. At the present time this clock represents exceptional value for money .
The clock is running perfectly having been subject to a recent service
It is an impressive piece being 7 ft 7 inches tall to the top of the hood,21 inches at its widest point and 10 inches deep. The centre of the trunk is only 14 inches wide.
I would encourage interested parties to view the clock and my limited photographic skill do it no favours at all and certainly do not show the quality of the finish.
My direct contact details are at the bottom of most of my listings should any interested party wish to get in touch.
