Circa 1900, Louis XVI style marble top and gilt metal mounted secretaire a abbatant or fall-front desk. Made by Whytock & Reid of Edinburgh, retaining its original Whytock & Reid locks by Langebearg & Co Birmingham and with a receipt for alterations from Whytock & Reid on 25 October 1955. The cabinet is profusely carved in the French taste and the fall front cabinet reveals an interior with 2 cupboards covered in parquetry and various pigeon holes and shelving. Beneath is a configuration of 3 drawers with French gilt handles and a pull out slide which holds 2 silver topped inkwells, hallmarked with Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh and dated 1896. Beneath the full sized writing slope is a configuration of 4 drawers, above a shaped and carved apron with a beaded fore-edge which continues down to the cabriole legs. All finishing on a foliate carved and curled toe.
