Mid-Century Silver Cigarette Case, Birmingham 1951
This is a smart George VI Mid-Century Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a gold washed interior. The cigarette case is square with engine turned decoration back and front and a blank cartouche in the top left hand corner.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham in 1951 by D. Bros. There are two Birmingham silversmiths, Davies Brothers and Dingley Brothers, who had near enough identical makers' marks and were both active at this time so it could originate from either firm.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 70 years of good service. The hinge and the clasp are both in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is almost square, measuring 7.4cm / 2.9ins by 8cm / 3.1ins and weighs in at a very respectable 89.8g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter B for 1951 and the D. BROs makers' mark for either Davies Brothers or Dingley Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
