Nineteenth century sycamore butter dish, a pretty thing made a little close to the edge of the tree. The block of wood from which it was turned was a little smaller in one dimension than the turner needed and he had to include a thin layer of tree bark to make up the shape on one side. Not unheard of in the days long before quality control men with clipboards, unusual but not disfiguring.
