Pair of Derby porcelain Campana vases.
A wonderful pair of early Derby porcelain campana shaped vases which date to 1810. The underneath red painted marks indicate the Derby factory period from 1800 through to 1825. Earlier pieces had the same painted mark but in different colours.
These two vases have gilded serpent handles and a abundance of floral gilding on dark blue background. The inside is white glaze.
The handpainted pictures on each vase are, according to the description on the base, "Views of Birmingham". This cannot be the Birmingham we all know, as to my memory there are no cliffs or mountains in the West Midlands. If it is then it was definitely painted when a "clean air zone" was not needed.
Looking up Birmingham, Alabama, in America it is not there either. I can only assume that the artist was given a free reign to paint whatever interpretation they liked.
They stand 22cms or 8.75 inches high.
One has a repair to one of the serpent handles and the base has needed some regilding in the past. I have shown the serpent handle in the last photograph so it can be seen how well done the repair has been.
These can be collected from us either at Leicester, Stamford or Newark, or we can deliver in the East Midlands. Otherwise we can send by courier with double box packaging to give good protection to the vases at a charge of £45.
