Pair of Large Japanese Cloisonne Chargers, Meiji Japanese large chargers lobed %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
In General

A large, rare pair of absolutely breathtaking, Japanese, hand decorated, lobed circular chargers or plates comprising incredibly intricate enamel decoration on bronze, Meiji Period 1868 - 1913. These circular chargers have the benefit of 16 lobes and an opposing design.

The chargers, each of lobed circular form, have complex central medallions, within a formal floral and diaper border, with stunning images of chrysanthemums, other flowers, foliage and butterflies on an aventurine background. These chargers literally glitter under lights! The quality of the workmanship and attention to detail is awe-inspiring. Magnificent, vividly decorated dragons fly around the edge of each charger.

The reverse has a scroll pattern on a blue enamel background. The chargers have attractive bronze rims.

Cloisonne is an ancient and highly skilled technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured glass paste, known as enamel, placed within enclosures made of copper, called cloisons.

Year:

1868 - 1913

Material:

Enamel on bronze

Condition:

In good antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or restoration. There is a dent on one of the lobes of one of the chargers where it has been pushed forward. The enamel is cracked and crazed in this area and there is enamel loss on the reverse. However, the damage is not immediately obvious from the front and does not take away from the overall stunning effect of these magnificent chargers. In general the enamel is in excellent condition with no other loss of enamel. There are superficial, barely visible scratches and enamel crazing across the chargers, consistent with their age and use. Please see photographs.
