Rare English Deco Westminster Chiming Mantel Clock
Fabulous high-quality English Westminster chiming mantel Clock, by the Perivale Clock Manufacturing Company, London. (Financed by a consortium of wealthy businessmen involved in the British and European clockmaking sector, under the Chairmanship of Elias Buerger, of German decent, The Perivale Clock Manufacturing Co., started producing clocks from circa early-1934, from a new and purpose built factory in Perivale, London. Such was the company’s success, that it went on to become the second largest producer of domestic mechanical clocks in the UK by the late 1940’s).
This clock would have been hand-crafted in c1936, during the euphoric embellishment of all things Art Deco, a massively popular design vogue of the 1920’s and 1930’s that spread throughout the world. It combined modern creative styles, expert craftsmanship, and rich, colourful materials, characterized by bold geometric lines and ‘zigzagging’ forms. The Deco era represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and opulence all in-line with the social and technological advances of the day, and this outstanding period mantel clock has all of this, in abundance!
The clock is very rare, being one of only 1,000 produced at the time, as a ‘Special Limited Edition’ series - 500 made in light oak and black ebonised timber (such as this one), and 500 made in light and dark oak. Wonderfully proportioned, with an overt drum-head style outline, the clock oozes all things Art Deco…Resting on its hexagon shaped chrome-plated feet, the clock has an open-faced wooden dial with large chrome Arabic numerals and chrome Deco style skeleton hands, whilst the confident interaction of the clocks two different coloured timbers, completely engage the senses. The highly unusual chrome-plated sculpture, (set to the side of the dials face), further draws the eyes, as one marvels at the clocks breathtaking overall creative period design.
To the rear of the clock there is a hinged, (and operable) turn-catch door (the inner door, still exhibiting the clocks original Perivale guarantee paper label). The rear opening allows access to the clocks fabulous 8-day Perivale Westminster chiming movement. The 5 x rear-hung chiming hammers, served by a ‘British Made No.1’ Perivale cast iron chime-bar stand, chimes the quarters and hours and stamped into the lacquered and snailed finished backplate (adopted by Perivale for their exclusive range of pristine early chiming clocks), are the movements serial number (“30540”). There is also an impressed 1934-39 Perivale logo (a seated Britannia holding a shield and spear, with the legend “Perivale, All British Clocks”), which all help in dating the clock. The clock also comes with its Perivale die-cast alloy lenticular pendulum bob, and its original Perivale signed brass winding key.
A hugely impressive 1936 vintage British mantel clock of the very highest order..!
