Scottish Oak Orkney Chair
A large early 20th century oak framed Scottish Orkney chair.
The back is constructed from black oat straw and bent grass, bound together with cord made from twisted bent grass.
The back is almost straight for around 20 rows of straw weave before it curves smoothly out to create a comfortable supportive seat.
The chair has an oak and straw weave seat and the lower frame is also made of oak.
The four square legs have under stretchers between them to stabilise the chair and all have tight pegged joints.
The Orkney chair has developed through local island tradition, most likely originating from a humble piece of antique furniture that the islanders could make for themselves with local materials that were readily available.
In its very early stages the chairs design was a simple low round stool covered with straw.
It was then developed into a low chair in later years by adding of a straw back around two feet in height.
This design is thought to be a practical aspect, to shelter the occupant from the cold Orkney draughts.
The Orkney chair is in very good condition with a some old marks to the oak. (Circa 1920)
Height 107cm (42.1 inches)
Width 62cm (24.4 inches)
Depth 64.5cm (25.4 inches)
