Set of 6 Pairs Victorian Silver Plated Fish Eaters
This is an attractive Cased Set of Victorian Silver Plated Fish Eaters with Mother of Pearl handles dating to around the 1870s-1890s. The set has six fish knives and six fish forks. The blades of the knives and the heads of the forks are pierced and engraved with foliage in the Aesthetic style whilst the ferrules are embossed with scrolls and flowers and have blank cartouches.
There are no makers' marks or origin marks on the knives and forks with the blades of the knives simply being stamped EPNS for silver plate.
The Aesthetic movement flourished in the 1870s, 80s and 90s and was all about beauty being the most important element of any item. In silverware it is most often expressed by adding natural items to designs in a flowing style with great attention to detail.
Condition of the fish eaters is very good with no dings, dents or significant plate loss. The mother of pearl is also in good condition with just a couple of the knife handles having acquired a slight kink where the handles join the blades. They remain perfectly usable and secure. The red leather covered case is somewhat scuffed in places, particularly the corners but the hinges and clasp remain in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The knives are each 20.3cm / 8ins long, the forks are each 17.1cm / 6.7ins long and the set of 12 pieces (unboxed) weighs in at 415g / 14.6oz.
