Set of Vintage Silver Fruit Forks-Barker Bros-1962
This is a good quality cased set of Mid-Century Sterling Silver handled Fruit Forks with steel prongs. The steel upper part of the forks have a baluster shape and three prongs or tines. The Sterling Silver handles are in a classical style with a harebell design dropping down from the finial.
Not many of us use forks for eating fruit these days but these small well made forks are absolutely ideal for buffets or for platters of cheeses and meats.
The forks are made in Sheffield by Barker Brothers Silver Ltd and date to 1962. Barker Brothers had a long history dating back to 1801. They became very successful in the latter 19th century and through most of the 20th century, acquiring other silversmiths along the way and with factories in Birmingham and Sheffield and a showroom in London. They finally closed their doors in 1992.
Condition of the forks is very good with only the superficial wear you would expect after nearly 60 years of use. The box is also in very good condition with smooth hinges and firm clasps and just some small scuffs to the corners, which is hard to avoid. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each fork is 15.4cm / 6" long and the set of 6 together (unboxed) weighs 153.6g / 5.4oz but this is of course a mixture of silver and steel.
The hallmarks on the handle of each fork are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "U" for 1962 and the BBSLd makers' mark for Barker Brothers Silver Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
