Silver Plate Bowl & Tongs, M.H & Co, c.1910s/20s
This is a stylish early 20th century Silver Plate Bowl and Tongs. The twelve sided bowl sits on a slender stem rising from four splayed feet. There is a hook on the side of the bowl with a pair of tongs hanging from it.
This was most probably intended as a sugar bowl but could be used today for any small items that would benefit from being served with tongs, such as baklawa, turkish delight, petit fours or chocolates.
The bowl was made in Sheffield by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to around the 1910s/20s whilst the tongs, which are not the originals but work well with the bowl, were made by the Angora Silver Plate Co and date to around the 1920s/30s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 13.2cm / 5.2ins from rim to hook, 11.9cm / 4.7ins across and stands 12cm / 4.7ins high. The tongs are 9.7cm long. Bowl & tongs together weigh in at 209g / 7.4oz.
The underside of the bowl is stamped E P N S in Gothic style lettering for silver plate and has M H & Co in shield for Martin, Hall & Co. In addition, on the hook, is the registered design number 565239, which dates the original design of the bowl to 1910/11. The tongs are stamped E.P.N.S for silver plate, Made IN England and Angora Silver Plate Co Ltd.
