Silver Plated Bread Basket, H.H. Friend, c.1900-20
Here we have a very elegant early 20th Century Silver Plated Bread Basket. The dish is made in Birmingham by Henry Herbert Friend and dates to between 1900 & 1920. Henry Friend was principally a silversmith operating between those dates from premises is Soho Hill, Birmingham and is best known for his good quality cigarette boxes. However he did also produce a small amount of silver plated ware of which this is a fine example.
The bread basket or bowl is on a flat circular base with a stepped side and pierced decoration around the upper part of the body and a rolled rim. It is a very well made piece. The bowl works perfectly as a bread basket for the table today but would also be good for holding crisps or snacks or would be a very stylish holder for pot pourri.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced decoration and no plate loss. There is just minimal superficial surface wear, which is only to be expected after around 100 years of use.
The bread basket is 20.6cm / 8.1" in diameter and 3.7cm / 1.4" high.
The marks on the underside of the dish are the H.H.F makers' mark for Henry Herbert Friend and EPNS for electroplated nickel silver, ie silver plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
