Silver Squirrel Rattle / Teether, Charles Horner
Here we have a charming and rare George VI Sterling Silver Rattle & Teether. The silver rattle is modelled as a squirrel and the white bakelite teething ring is attached by a loop of ribbon.
The rattle was made by renowned silversmiths Charles Horner and assayed in Chester in 1946. Charles Horner established his firm in Halifax in the 1860s. They made exquisite jewellery and decorative silver items primarily for personal use and were at the height of their creativity during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. They were also prolific manufacturers of thimbles, both in solid silver and their own patented Dorcas thimbles, that were silver overlaid onto steel. The firm ceased trading in 1984.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents in the silver rattle and no damage to the teething ring. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The squirrel rattle is 4cm / 1.6ins high by 3.5cm / 1.4ins across and weighs in at 12.1g / 0.43oz of solid Sterling Silver. The teething ring is 6cm in diameter and all together the rattle & teether weigh 19.1g / 0.67oz.
The hallmarks on the squirrel are a little distorted by the seam but can still be clearly read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the stylised date letter V for 1946 and the C.H makers' mark for Charles Horner.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the rattle.
