Slate Striking Mantel Clock by Constantin Detouche %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An outstanding French polished black slate striking mantel antique clock of the very highest order, by one of the greatest and most prolific of French master clock sculptors and makers - Constantin Louis Detouche (1810-1889). Based at 158-160 Rue Saint-Martin Paris, this well-documented engineer was famed for being the designer and maker of many sought after complicated antique clocks, many of which today may only be seen in museums. Such was his reputation, that he was nominated the official clockmaker to the city of Paris and chief clockmaker to Emperor Napoléon III, (both around c1855). Any Detouche signed slate clock of the period, would have been considerably more expensive than the average similar product and this antique clocks simple design and minimal gilded engraving would have appealed to the higher classes of society, who viewed themselves as more refined than the lower working classes, who tended to favour a more lavishly designed slate antique clock, (such as those associated with the French Baroque style renaissance).

As was the trend in French mantel clock production during the mid-19th Century, this wonderful clock was designed, sculptured, and assembled by Detouche utilizing an exceptional Fritz Marti and Co. movement. (Of the famous French Marti family dynasty of clockmakers at Vieux-Charmont, in the district of Doubs).

The nicely proportioned breakfront stepped case of beautifully simple architecture sits on its robust plinth with both the front of case and plinth being creatively hand-engraved in Sgraffito style, with floral decoration. The clock’s white enamelled dial (signed by Detouche) has black Roman numerals and retains its original pair of blued Straight Breguet hands, protected by convex glaze, mounted into its moulded brass bezel.

As highlighted, the clock has a high-quality circular 8-day pendulum driven movement by Marti, this one, with an outside count wheel regulating its striking mechanism, the movement being accessed via a rear hinged glazed door (also mounted in a brass bezel). The backplate is stamped with the Detouche details and two serial numbers, together with the 1860 Medaille De Bronze, F. Marti et Cie trademark, helping to date the antique clock. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’ and comes with its French pendulum and a winding key.

Detouche was an immensely successful clockmaker, passing away a very wealthy man. Any period signed clock by this famed maker (such as this fine example), are naturally rare and much sought after today!
