A simply stunning large blue and white jug. It has a typical chinoiserie type design running around the body which also has a picture of an English Georgian manor house on the front with a grand looking terrace and lands descending to a lake. Having a house in the design makes me wonder if it was made for the owner of the house. The pearlware has that lovely blue tinge to the glaze, which makes it very attractive. Around the top are vine leaves and grapes, which is unusual, as these were not generally for serving drinks. On the rim is also a brown stripe, often found on early blue and white pearlware pottery. It is probably from one of the Staffordshire potteries but there are no markings to the underneath.
It is in very good condition and has a good ring when flicked with the finger. There are two very small glaze flakes to the spout, which I have shown in the last photograph. Other than that there are no chips or restorations.
It is large being 7.5 inches or 19 centimeters tall.
It dates to the late Georgian / William III period, circa 1820.
