Good quality modern German copy of ‘Touch’ one of the acclaimed series of six 15th.c. Flemish tapestries known as ‘The Lady & The Unicorn’. Regarded as one of the greatest surviving medeival artworks, now to be found in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, the tapestries are interpreted as representing the five senses plus love. Each features the same noble lady, a pennant with three cresent moons, a unicorn and lion – both important heraldic symbols. They are believed to have been produced in Fladers around 1500 for a member of the French noble family of Le Viste whose arms feature in the designs.

In ‘Touch’ the Lady stands with one hand on the horn of the Unicorn, the other holding the pennant whilst the lion looks on. In the backround stand dogs and a monkey set amongst trees against a mille-fleurs floral ground. Measuring 50″ x 57″ beautifully woven in wool with surface embroidery. Excellent condition, presented hung from an antique brass rail 65″ long with large finials.
