Very Rare John Pearson Arts & Crafts Portrait Dish
For sale today we have this extremely rare and quite possibly unique, hand painted dish by John Pearson of the Guild of Handicrafts. More noted for his work in copper, Pearson also created a number of hand painted chargers, dishes, and plates etc, most of these were in the William de Morgan style and featured Galleons and Mythical Beasts. This is the first time that I have encountered a Maiden's portrait as the subject and it's absolutely stunning! I think that it may have been a commission piece but that is just my gut feeling, rather than any actual knowledge. The central portrait has a flower adorned tiara and necklace that are picked out in silver, the head is set against a cross hatched ground that has gold/ gilt lining. The borders are pure Arts and Crafts with panels of spade shaped leave and flowing foliage. Further decorated to the rear with circles and swirling borders, along with A JP monogram and the stylised "X" that he used to mark his hand painted wares.
Measures 7 1/2" in diameter. No chips, cracks or repairs but some paint loss as shown (I believe the base may have been smudged in manufacture).
