Victorian Mahogany & Pine Double Half Tester Bed
This antique tester bed dates primarily from the nineteenth century, but has some more modern parts and alteration. It is constructed from mahogany, some solid, some veneered, with some pine parts. The canopy frame and uprights are antique, as is the footboard and side rails, but the slatted base and headboard are more modern. The bed fits a standard UK double mattress, but is slightly wider than the mattress (the base is around 56" wide). The footboard has lovely barley twist supports and the footboard and canopy frame have gilt and gesso decoration. The bed retains metal castors. The fabric of the bed is more modern and is grubby and worn and would beneft from replacement.
Condition: Overall this piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use and would benefit from some sympathetic restoration. Some parts are more modern, including the headboard and slatted base. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, which is heavy in places, and the piece is overall faded. There is some wood and veneer loss in places, and there are some significant signs of woodworm (primarily to the pine uprights and side rails) - this is not active but has been retreated as a precaution. The fabric is grubby and worn and would benefit from replacement. Some of the bolts that hold the bed together and the canopy in place are worn and have movement. Some of the gesso and gilt decoration is cracked and missing. The metal fixings have some surface rusting, and some of the wooden rings to hold the curtains are missing. There are some areas of alteration and repair, including to the barley twist supports and finials of the footboard.
