Victorian Silver Butter Knife, London, 1891
This is a very attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Butter Knife. The butter knife is in the classic Old English pattern with floral engraving all along the front of the blade and up the stem.
The butter knife is made in London by renowned silversmiths Wakely & Wheeler and dates to 1891. Wakely & Wheeler were the successor company to the Lias family and could trace their history back to silversmith John Lias in 1791. They were finally bought out in the late 1950s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 14.7cm / 5.8ins long and weighs a respectable 21.5g / 0.76oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter Q for 1891 and the J.W over F.C.W makers mark for James Wakely & Frank Wheeler of Wakely & Wheeler.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
