This is a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug in the Georgian Revival style. The jug has a flat oval base, a looping handle and a broad lip. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The cream jug is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1893. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in the late 1880s, primarily making good quality silver tableware, which they assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.

Condition is good with just a few tiny dings to the body of the jug and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug measures 11.7cm / 4.6ins from lip to handle, 5cm / 1.9ins across the body and stands 11.3cm / 4.4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 122.6g / 4.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter t for 1893 and the N & H makers' mark for Nathan & Hayes.
