Victorian Silver Plate Gravy Boat, Elkington, 1898
This is a good quality late Victorian Silver Plate Gravy Boat. The gravy boat has a flat base and a sweeping handle in the Art Nouveau style. Despite being 19th century it has no ornamentation and would suit any table setting, antique, vintage or modern.
The gravy boat is made in Birmingham by world famouse silversmiths and electroplaters Elkington & Co and dates to 1898. Elkington & Co were the first company in the world to register a patent for electroplating silver and their plated wares are always of the very best quality. Founded in 1836, they registered their patent in 1838 and remained at the top of the market until they were merged with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb to form British Silverware in the early 1960s.
Condition is generally good with just a small area of wear to the silver plate on the left hand side of the body. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The gravy boat is a good size for a family roast dinner measuring 21cm / 8.2ins from lip to handle, 9.1cm / 3.6ins across and 10cm / 3.9ins in height. It weighs 289g / 10.2oz.
The underside of the gravy boat is nice and clearly marked. It has the E & Co in a shield, the Gothic E & Co in separate boxes and the stamp Elkington & Co, in case you weren't sure who made it! It also has the Elkington date letter M for 1898.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
