Victorian Silver Plate Pickle Fork, J.A. Rhodes
This is a very distinctive Victorian Silver Plated Pickle Fork. The fork has a long slender stem with an oriental style arched finial with a lotus flower motif. The head of the fork is engraved front and back with a harebell design.
The pickle fork is made in Sheffield by the extravagantly named Jehoiada Alsop Rhodes & Barber and dates to between 1878 and 1886. Rhodes & Barber's firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters. Rhodes founded the business in the 1860s with Barber joining him in 1878. They ceased trading in 1886.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and no plate loss, which is unusual in a pickle fork as it is frequently dipped into acidic vinegar. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The fork is 18cm / 7ins long, perfect for getting that last pickled onion out of the jar, and weighs 28.2g / 0.99oz.
The underside of the stem is marked with the Gothic letters EPNS for silver plate and has the JAR in a clover leaf stamp for A.J. Rhodes & Barber. Before Barber became a partner the mark had the J at the top with the A & R underneath, after Barber joined it had the A at the top with the J & R underneath, as in this case.
