Victorian Silver Plated Nautilus Salt, c.1890s
Here we have a top quality and very striking late Victorian Silver Plated Open Salt with a Gilt interior dating to around the 1890s. The salt is shaped as a Nautilus shell whilst the base is modelled to give the effect of sea water.
The salt is made by or for the retailer Kay & Co of Worcester. Originally founded by William Kilbourne Kay as Kay's Universal Store of Worcester, they became Kay & Co in the 1890s. They primarily sold watches, antique jewellery and small household items.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss, either silver or gold, and just a little salt marking deep inside the shell. The shell is fixed to the base by a bolt and whilst it is securely attached there is a little movement between the shell and the base, which could probably be resolved by further tightening of the bolt. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 9cm / 3.5ins long, 6.7cm / 2.6ins wide and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at 223.6g / 7.9oz.
The base is marked with K & Co in a heart for Kay & Co of Worcester and also with BS in conjoined circles. This may be the mark of the company that made the salt for Kay & Co but we have been unable to identify it.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
