Victorian Silver Soup Ladle, Elizabeth Eaton, 1853
This is a top quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Soup Ladle in the classic Fiddle pattern. The soup ladle is made in London by Elizabeth Eaton and dates to 1853. Elizabeth Eaton was the wife of famous spoon maker William Eaton, one of the finest silversmiths of his time. After William's death in 1845, Elizabeth took on the business and registered her own makers' mark until she was joined by her son John Eaton in 1858 after which they continued working together until 1863.
This soup ladle is typical of the fine quality of Elizabeth Eaton's work and is a well made piece in a heavy gauge of silver. Unusually for this period, there are no initials or engraving of any kind and no indication that anything has been erased. The soup ladle remains entirely usable today or would make a great addition to a collection.
Whilst the ladle has definitely been used, it remains in very good condition with just one small flat spot in the bowl and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 160 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 33.5cm / 13.25" long and weighs a very substantial 270g / 9.52oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the gothic date letter "S" for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the EE makers' mark for Elizabeth Eaton.
