Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Edward & Sons, 1898
This is a smart pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. Unusually for the Victorian era, they are completely plain and unadorned. There also have no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs were made in Sheffield in 1898 for the famous and prestigious Glasgow retailer George Edward & Sons of Buchanan Street. Founded in 1838 by George Edward, they later opened a second showroom in the City of London and remained in business into the 1960s when the firm was purchased by Mappin & Webb.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 10.3cm / 4ins long and weigh a respectable 21.1g / 0.74oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of one arm, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter f for 1898 and the D E over G E sponsors' mark for George Edward & Sons of Glasgow.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
