Victorian Silver Trowel Bookmark, B'ham, 1887
This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Bookmark. The bookmark is shaped as a trowel with a leaf and pin decorated handle and a split in the blade to slip over the page in your book or document. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The bookmarks was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Mitchell Brothers and dates to 1887. Founded in the early 1880s, Mitchell Brothers operated from premises in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter and specialised in small silver items for personal use and small items of tableware. They remained in business until around 1905.
Condition is good with just one small ding on the underside of the handle plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bookmark is 7.7cm / 3ins long and 1.6cm / 0.63ins across the blade. It weighs in at 3.4g / 0.12oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the blade of the trowel, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter n for 1887 and the M Bros makers' mark for Mitchell Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
