Victorian Silver Xmas Napkin Ring, R Pringle, 1895
This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The napkin ring is circular with an engraved foliate garland to either side of a cartouche which is inscribed Oswald Xmas 1898. One can imagine a well laden Victorian Christmas dining table where each guest had their own personalised silver napkin ring to use and then take away as a memento.
The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by Robert Pringle & Sons and dates to 1895, so a few years before the engraving was done. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. The company manufactured in London, Sheffield and Birmingham. They remained a family run firm until finally closing in the late 1950s. They made a wide range of silverware for domestic and personal use but are best known for their consistently good quality tableware and flatware.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.1cm / 1.6ins in diameter, 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep and weighs in at 10.5g / 0.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the napkin ring, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the R.P makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
