Victorian Treen Match Box. Treen Match Holder
19th century friction matches were highly combustable, so needed protection. Most protective containers were of metal, but a few wooden examples can be found.
This small lidded pot is a particularly decorative example. Turned from a country wood such as alder, it has a pierced and scribed brass feature to the top, which includes a raised central boss. The boss would have held a waxed match, lit to provide a small light when getting into bed, for sealing letters, or when needed, hence the names "the goodnight match" and "go-to-bed". Circa 1870
Height 8cm (3 inches)
