Vintage Arts & Crafts Textile Embroidery Bedspread
A Fine and Rare Antique / Vintage Embroidered Coverlet or Bedspread
Date- first half of the 20th Century, circa 1930 - 1940 (possibly earlier) and very much in the English Arts and Crafts tradition.
A truly wonderful antique / vintage embroidery, handmade over many considerable hours and with a remarkable degree of skill. The design consists 16 large circles united by closed flower-heads (probably sunflowers). Each circle with an outer ring of 20 crescent moons, with a further central flowerhead motif located to the centre. With two tone foliate infill.
The base / ground is of an unbleached, natural linen, with the design in dyed wool in a palette of fresh, two tone green and yellow.
The piece has survived well (see condition notes below) as it has obviously been kept out of direct sunlight.
A stunning find for the vintage, English textile collector.
Could be used as intended, or hung on the wall, advised out of sunlight to maintain the excellent colour.
Dimensions -
Approx 180 cms squared, at the extreme corners, where it is slightly wider.
Condition -
In overall very good condition for age and not too faded at all, having been kept folded and out of direct sunlight. The piece does have some limited staining and marking in places, which I've tried hard to show and point to in the photographs. There has also been an old, neat repair to the very centre (see last photo) and also a little weakness in one part nearer the outer seam (again, see relevant photo). All that said, the piece displays extremely well and is a credit to its former keeper(s) over the years.
Please request further images prior to purchase. I am happy to provide them.
