This attractive gilt frame dates from the first half of the twentieth century, but is older in style. It is constructed from wood with plaster decoration in the Victorian style. It is good quality and heavy construction. The frame is empty, but has a metal plaque fixed to the front which reads: 'Augustus John Poppet'. There are also various auction and shipping labels attached to the back of the frame, although these are difficult to read. We believe that the frame would originally have housed one of Augustus John's portraits of his daughter Poppet. From the labels on the back we believe that the portrait itself (with the frame) was sold at Bonhams on 8 November 2007 for £48k.

Condition: Overall in fair condition and in need of some restoration. It has some scuffing, grubbiness and wear to the paintwork and finish and some areas of loss. There is some overall cracking and crazing. There is some signficant loss to one corner and the gilt paintwork is badly dulled. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.
