Vintage Silver Bookworm 10cm Ruler, CME, c.1990s
Here we have a charming Vintage Sterling Silver 10cm / 4in Ruler. The ruler is decorated in the middle with a bespectacled bookworm or snail sitting on top of a pile of books, which makes a useful handle for moving the ruler around.
The ruler was imported into the UK by C.M.E Jewellery and assayed in Birmingham in the 1990s. C.M.E. Jewellery is a wholesale company based in Leicester that was founded in 1977. They import silver antique jewellery and novelties into the UK, some of it to bespoke designs. Their pieces are sold through a variety of high street and online jewellers.
Although the ruler has definitely been used, overall condition is good with just a slight curve to the ruler and a few scratches on the underside as you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The overall length of the ruler is 10.9cm / 4.3ins with the graduated markings showing 10cm on one edge and 4 inches on the other. It is 1.9cm / 0.75ins across and 2cm / 0.79ins to the top of the bookworm. It has a nice chunky feel in the hand and weighs in at 52.8g / 1.86oz of solid Sterling Silver.
There is a central stamp of 925 in the middle of the underside of the ruler. The hallmarks, at one end of the ruler, are very small but readable with a magnifier. They show the international scales symbol and the number 925 for Sterling Silver introduced in 1976, a separate 925 stamp, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the C.M.E sponsors' mark for C.M.E. Jewellery.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the ruler.
