Vintage Silver Egg Cup, Reid & Sons, 1968
This is a charming Vintage Sterling Silver Egg Cup from the 1960s. The egg cup has a low spreading foot, which flows smoothly into the body of the egg cup, which has angular handles on either side. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg cup is made by Reid & Sons of Newcastle and assayed in London in 1968. Reid & Sons were a very famous jewellers and silversmiths in Newcastle-upon-Tyne dating back to 1778. They continued their retail presence up until the end of the 1960s when they became part of Northern Goldsmiths. One branch of the family moved to London and established a firm of silversmiths there during the 19th century.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over fifty years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup is 7.5cm / 2.9ins from handle to handle, 4.3cm / 1.7ins across the top rim and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs a very respectable 51.7g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the egg cup are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1968 and the R & S Ltd makers' mark for Reid & Sons of Newcastle.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
