William IV Silver Egg Spoon, Phillip Phillps 1833
This is a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Egg Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. Egg Spoons are similar in design to mustard spoons but larger and slightly more squared off and are perfect for a soft boiled egg! There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The egg spoon was made in London by silversmith Phillip Phillips and dates to 1833. Phillip Phillips registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in London in 1826. He was a specialist spoon and flatware maker who was active until at least the late 1830s. His mark is not a common one but his pieces are always well made.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a couple of shallow scratches in the bowl plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 190 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 11.8cm / 4.6ins long and weighs in at 12.4g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1833, the George IV duty mark (although William IV was king from 1830 his duty mark wasn't introduced until 1834) and the P P makers' mark for Phillip Phillips.
