Windsor Captain's/Smoker's Chair Victorian Elm
We have this beautiful bow-back captain's/smoker's chair in the Windsor style. Victorian, possibly circa 1880, it has a letter S, probably the maker's mark, stamped on the back edge of the seat
Standing on four nicely turned baluster legs, connected by a double H stretcher, the seat has the typical saddle shape of a Windsor. Eight turned spindles, standing at a slight angle to the seat, support the horseshoe-shaped arms, which terminate in scrolled hand grips, and the backrest
The backrest, which features a decorative scroll at each end, and the seat are formed from elm, the rest of the chair is beech.
One of the stretchers looks like it has been chewed by a puppy. We did not try to hide this as it is part of its history as are other slight marks and scuffs.
The original finish was beyond repair so it was stripped off. We did not sand the chair nor was it stained. We used traditional hand-applied French polishing techniques to finish the chair. Given its age this would have been the original finishing method. The high gloss was gently rubbed down to produce a mellow satin finish with a rich patina in keeping with a piece of this age.
A perfect statement piece, this chair will add a touch of style and elegance to any room and will be a talking point for years to come.
Height of back 78 cm Height of seat 44 cm Height of arms 72 cm
Depth of seat 43 cm Width of seat 41 cm Overall width of arms 70 cm
