Photos

Description

Artist - Lewis John Wood (1813-1901). British artist, exibited at the Royal Academy 1831-1872, member of the Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours 1870-1888. Best known for his architectural street scenes of Belguim, Normandy and Brittany.

Title - Part of the Old Church Trinité at Angers

Medium - Oil on Board

Details - Attractive architectural scene in an antique decorative gilt frame. The frame is of the period and we believe it to be original to the painting, but please note that we are not 100% of this. Not signed on the picture that we can see, but signed and dated on the reverse. Dated 1855. There are two labels on the reverse, both with the title on. The older label (possibly a gallery label) has the artist's address written on. The frame inner mount is shaped and has a name plaque at the bottom.

DateMid Victorian : 1855 ArtistLewis John Wood DimensionsImage - 30cm by 40cm Frame - 51cm by 60.5cm, 6cm deep Condition(Picture) - Overall in good bright condition with vibrant colours. Some surface grubbiness as might be expected. Some scuffing and minor paint loss around the edges where the picture has moved in the mount. The picture is slightly loose in the mount and would benefit from being re-mounted within the mount. There are a few flecks of gold paint to the picture where it looks as if the mount has been touched up at some point without removing the picture. (Frame) - Overall in fair to good condition, but would benefit from some restoration. There are signs of old restoration and the gilt paintwork has been touched up at some point. The plaster (jesso?) has cracked in numerous places resulting in some areas of loss. The frame is overall grubby, dusty and scuffed and would benefit from being cleaned.
