Victorian Rosewood Correspondence / Jewellery Box

Photos

Description

This attractive Victorian box has lovely rosewood veneers and dates from approx. 1860. The box would originally have been a writing / correspondendence / travelling jewellery box. The hinged lid opens to reveal a gilt-tooled leather-fronted document wallet inside the lid. The base of the main secton is lined with a blue / puple velvet, but is missing a removable tray of some type. There is a secret drawer beneath the main section which is accessed by pulling out two metal pins along the top edge. This drawer is padded and fabric lined. The box retains its lock, but please note that it is mising its key. There is a handle to either side of the box with an attractive two-headed phoenix back-plate, but the ring handle is missing at one side. There is a small brass plaque on the top of the box, which has been engraved with initials (looks to be JNB).

Condition Overall this lovely box would benefit from some tlc. As is mentioned above there looks to be a removable tray of some type missing from within the main section. The key is missing. The box has some general scuffing, scratching and wear to the woodwork and there is some wood shrinkage splitting to the lid. There is some wood and veneer loss around the edge of the lid where it looks as if it has been broken into at some point. There are some other areas of minor loss to the veneer, and there are some signs of old repair to the secret drawer. There is an area of damage to the wood and loss to the veneer at one of the back corners. The fabric lining of the secret drawer has some fraying and wear, and the felt underneath the box is worn and lifting. As is mentioned above one of the ring handles is missing from the side.

The approx. measurements are as follows
17cm high, 43.5cm wide, 28cm deep
