Description

This lovely antique silk top hat was made by the well-known Edwardian department store John Baker & Co. Ltd. of Kensington, London. It stamped on the inside of the hat with the maker's crest. We believe the hat to date from c.1910. The hat has a brushed silk finish and retains its inner silk lining, which is in good condition. The hat is unsized, but we have gven the measurements below. The hat also retains its original hard travelling case and buffing pad. The pad is also embossed with John Baker & Co. Ltd. Kensington. The case has a leather handle and is constructed from card with a fabric-type finish.

Condition Overall very good condition with some wear consistent with age and use. The inner lining is discoloured / browned. There is a name written on the inner rim and initials written by the crest. There is some light wear around the top edge. It is slightly dusty. The buffing pad shows signs of use and some wear to the lettering. The box has some heavier wear and some scuffing around the edges and to the handle. There is some splitting to the top of the box. The metal fixings have some surface rusting.

Hat - 30.6cm long (outer), 19.3cm long (inner), 25.5cm wide (outer), 15.4cm wide (inner), 53.5cm diameter of inner rim, 16cm high.
