Description

This antique sideboard is a substantial piece, and dates from c.1810. It is constructed primarily from mahogany with lovely veneers and ebony and satinwood inlays. The sideboard has an angular bowfront with two central drawers, the lower of which is a recessed (hidden) drawer. To the left hand side is a single-door cupboard, and to the right-hand side is a swing-out lead lined cellarette section. The piece is supported on six slightly tapering legs. The drawers and doors retain brass handles that are old replacements and all retain their locks, although please note that no key is present. The sideboard would originally have had a brass back rail, although this is now missing.

Condition Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use and would benefit from some restoration work. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and there is some fading and discolouration. There is some scratching and marking to the top. There are some areas of loss and damage to the inlays and veneers. There is a wood shrinkage split to the right-hand side. As is mentioned above the piece originally would have had a brass back rail, but this is now missing and there are holes at either side of the top at the back where the uprights would have sat. There are some paint scuffs and white marks. There are some signs of old restoration and repair in places - the legs on the left-hand side have a metal strengthening brackets fitted at some point. There are some signs of woodworm to the back of the sideboard - this has been treated. The top drawer has a green baize lining, but this has deteriorated and is holed and damaged.

The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 92cm high, 191cm wide, 73cm deep (to maximums).
