Description

This rare yarn maker's textile slide rule dates from the late nineteeth century. It is made from boxwood with brass ends and has a double-sided brass slide in the middle. The rule was made by E. Preston & Sons Birmingham and compiled by James Holmes M.S.A. Burnley. The front of the rule has various measurements, one of which is labelled 'Diameters of Yarns & Square Root' and the back has various formulae and measurements which may have been used in machinery set up. Beneath the slide rule is an impressed 1111 mark.

Condition: Overall in very good condition with some wear consistent with age and use. The brasswork is tarnished and the woodwork has some scuffing and wear and some marks. The slide is a little stiff, but does move.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
30.5cm long.
