Description

This superb antique sideboard dates from c.1790-1800. It is very much in the Sheraton style and is of lovely small proportions. The piece has a pronounced serpentine front and the top has serpentine sides also. The top has a generous overhang. The piece is constructed from mostly solid mahogany with kingwood inlay and kingwood cross-banding to the top. Beneath the top is a central small drawer, flanked on either side by a deep drawer. The drawers retain lovely decorative brass handles, and the deeper drawers retain their locks and escutcheons and one original working key is present. The sideboard is supported on elegant inlaid tapering legs, which at the front are shaped to match the serpentine curve. Unusally the piece also retains some provenance. A purchase receipt from 1977 from Pelham Galleries London gives the details of the sideboard and states that it was purchased by Lady Bearsted (of Upton House in Oxfordshire) on behalf of a friend. Also present is a Pelham Galleries card with hand-written item details and stock number on.

Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some signs of old restoration and repair. There is a small dent to the right-hand side front edge. There is some wood shrinkage cracking to the left-hand side.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 85.5cm high, 123cm wide, 53cm deep (to maximums).
