Description

Artist - Claude Michel Clodion (1738-1814), a French sculptor in the rococo style.

Medium - Relief-work plaque

Details - Lovely antique metal relief-work plaque depicting a classical scene of a nude woman riding the clouds with another woman and a cherub behind her. Made from a heavy cast metal. Signed 'Clodion' in one corner, but no foundry marks. Although the plaque does clearly have some significant age we are not sure whether it dates from before or after Clodion's death in 1814. Framed in a vintage carved oak frame, which is not original, and probably dates from around the 1930s.

Condition - Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age. Overall a little grubby and dusty and woud benefit from a careful clean. There is some staining / scuffing to one side of the front of the plaque and some further staning / scuffing by the signature. There is some slight surface corrosion in places. The frame is grubby, knocked and scuffed and has some loss to one upper corner at the back. The frame is backed with cardboard.

The approx. measurements are as follows:
Visible Image - 48.5cm by 33.5cm
Frame - 64cm by 47.5cm, 5cm deep.
